Thanks to a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust (funded by sales of Maryland's Treasure of the Chesapeake license plate) we leave our urban campus to get outside and learn through hands-on experiences. Most of our student driven best management practices are done off-site.
Students who attend Chesapeake Bay Foundation Trips are required to perform an action to help save the bay. Here are some of the projects students designed to save energy.
High School Environmental Science students conduct an energy waste investigation and convince BLS Head of School to implement actions that lead to energy savings.

Activity: Vampire Loads. Ms. Moore's Environmental Science students began an investigation of energy use at Baltimore Lab School. Students are seeking out "vampire loads" - electronic devices that are plugged into the wall, yet not in use. Even when something is turned off, like a projector screen, it is still drawing energy.
After collecting data, students used a formula to calculate how much money could be saved in one year by reducing vampire loads. In addition to saving money, reducing vampire loads can also lead to cleaner air in the environment! Students wrote a persuasive letter to our Head of School, Steve Buettner. The following actions were made to conserve energy and reduce our Carbon Footprint.
