Let's talk about Solid Waste!
Student driven campaign to reduce solid waste during lunch
initiated by high school and middle school students.
Date: November 29, 2017
Grade Level: High School
Subject Area: Statistics
Names of students: Loye, Brenna, George and Claire
# of students: 75
1st period: 35 students in grades 9 and 12.
2nd period: 40 students in grades 10 and 11.
Activity: Our Solid Waste Behavior
Loye, Brenna, George and Claire presented information on Solid Waste to their peers. This is a beginning of a behavior change campaign targeted to reduce food waste in the high school lunch rooms. During the Kick Off Solid Waste Assembly, statistics students presented a power point they created about food waste and played a student created game to explain how the system they created to measure the food we waste during lunch would work. Statistics students will weigh solid food waste and report their findings to the school through the Lab 10 News. This project will continue throughout the remainder of the school year.

Grade Level: 6th, 7th and 8th grade
Subject Area: Language Arts
# of students: 43
Names of students:
6th grade: Blair, Erin, Jacob, Erika, Matthew, Eliza, Phillip, Ethan, Charlotte, Dylan, Grant, Baila, Marguerite, Connor, Pascale, Logan, Jesse, Thomas, Jordan, Max.
7th grade: Joseph, Josie, Will, Judy, Kendall, Shea, Amelia, Joshua, Jack, Joe, Cameron, Brett, Torben.
8th grade: Dana, Lucas, Sheva, Olivia, Andrei, Leah, Cuyler, Cian, Will, Samuel.
Activity: Share Table @ Lab. Engage and Inform the Community!
Among their solutions were a plan for beginning a “share table”; its purpose is to allow students to place unopened, packaged food that is unwanted on a particular table, rather than throw it away. Students who are still hungry can help themselves. The “share table” will be up and running soon. Students worked in small group to develop a funny, persuasive, emotional and/or dramatic commercial to present the idea of a share table to the School. Commercials were shown on the morning announcements.
Teachers: Darlene White, Brenna Blount, Margaret Fabian, 6th, 7th, 8th grade Language Arts.

Subject Area: Math
Activity: What do a share table, a landfill, and a fashion show have in common? While the Middle School wrapped up its Wednesday Edgemakers program, the theme of waste reduction carried through to the end of this quarter. Using techniques for channeling the creative process, brainstorming and collaboration that were practiced in Edgemakers, students looked for ways to solve the real-world problem of waste. Our fashion show was actually a “Trashion” show where students made something wearable by reusing or recycling materials. Finally, to underscore the problems associated with landfills, students were asked to design a small scale version of one using research and the engineering process. Their models were tested at the end of the day to find out which team saved the “town” from toxic waste.
