Congratulations!
Baltimore Lab School has recertified as a Maryland Green School! The Maryland Green School award represents a school-wide commitment to environmental literacy that includes staff, students, and the community.

3rd application Recertifying as a Special Education Green School

*Please take a quick look at the application linked above.  Just take a glance, the application is very long and requires many forms of documentation and details!

Documenting and organizing our green school efforts is a volunteer position and I wanted to inform everyone that Doug Dows and his High School Green Team will be documenting our green school efforts into the future.  I will continue to assist and I hope many others will volunteer!

Have a nice Bay!

Ninth Grade Reflections

Cade: I want to remember the fun that I had. I had fun touching the fish and crabs.

Katie: The sailing trip with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation was really fun I like seeing all the animals and learning about them. This trip influenced me to be more careful with living animals. I would relive when we could pick up the fish.

Aba: Well this school trip was deeply fun and I really liked the trip. The main thing I could remember would be that when we the students could pick up fish or just touch them. Lastly if I could relive one moment it would be just being on the boat overall, it was fun and calming to be somewhere else then a school building. So I thank you, Captain Dave, Mr. Albert, and Miss Leigh, thank you so much for this amazing trip.

Josh: Dear Albert, Lee and Captain Dave,
Thanks for the amazing trip. One of my favorite parts of the trip was documenting all the awesome things we did. I wish I could video the obstacle course inside the boat. Also, thanks for teaching us about the bay. I had an amazing time with you. Thanks for everything.

Jack: Dear, Captain Dave, Mr. Albert, and Ms. Lee,
Thank you so much for teaching us about the Chesapeake Bay and how we can help the Bay. I would also like to thank you for showing us all the different wildlife that we caught, like the flounder and striped bass and the blue crabs. In conclusion, thank you so much.

Nate: It was nice to be on a ship that was older than ww1.

Katie: I loved being on the boat and learning new facts about how people used the skipjack.

Quinn: The sailing trip with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation was really fun I like seeing all the animals and learning about them. This trip influenced me to be more careful with living animals. I would relive when we could pick up the fish.

10th grade CBF Trip Reflections

I would like to remember all of the interesting things that I learned on this trip, like all the different fish breeds we caught. I would also like to remember what it was like riding on a Skipjack since very few are regularly used. The whole experience was definitely something to remember and to keep in mind, especially considering the dire state our environment is currently in. Dana

What I liked about the trip was that me and my friends were bonding and the boat was fun. I also liked holding the crab. And many more things too.

I had a great time on the trip and I really enjoyed the ice cream and cold drinks after and the museum was fun.

I liked the trip because I got to hold a crab.

How might this experience have influenced my outlook or approach to relationships this school year?
I had a positive experience on this Skipjack trip because I got a chance to be out on the Bay and plant oysters. The experience taught me more about the Chesapeake Bay, more about the state of Maryland and oysters. I want to remember my good experience on this boat trip and how much fun I had catching fish, planting oysters, getting to know my classmates better and just being in nature. I also enjoyed handling the bay critters and catching the fish and crabs. I liked the splashing of the cold water because it felt refreshing to me. I wish I had a Skipjack of my own so I could go on boat trips with my family.
If I could relive just one moment from the boat trip I would probably choose the catching of the bay critters and the crab holding. Why would I choose this? I would choose this because I want to clean all of the trash out of the bay and save the oysters and other Bay creatures. Joanna

One thing I want to remember from the trip is when we caught 13 fish, 3 crabs, 1 stinging jellyfish, and 1 non-stinging jellyfish. It was fun to pull the net and throw the net out with Ben to catch the fish, crabs, and jellyfish. I also remember how much information the CBF staff told and knew about the Bay and environment. Another good thing I remember, is pulling one of the sails and also crawling the bottom of the boat. I also liked that it was windy and a high tide and we went up and down the waves.

My time on the trip was fun because we got to pull the rope when we were bringing in the net. I want to remember how fun it was and Albert and Lee telling us how the CBF got formed and how old the boat us with the people on the boat.

My time on the bay trip was really interesting and educational. I was able to see what a living oyster looks like in its shell and saw many unique fish species. We saw flounder fish crabs and comb jellies. We even went to the Annapolis Maritime Museum and learned that there was a law enforcement called the oyster police that were supposed to find illegal oyster smugglers. These are the reasons why the oyster trip was very fun and educational.

This experience strengthened my relationships with my fellow students for this school year because when you are out on the water, you are helpless and you are exposed to the elements. That brings people together. Even though we were learning about the Chesapeake Bay, it felt like the crew were just telling us that we can do anything that we put our minds to.
The experience was a fun time. I liked getting to hold the crabs. Getting ice cream helped me bond with my classmates. The bus ride was really fun. I liked getting outside to explore the Chesapeake Bay. I learned a lot. I also like that we get to miss class when we go on these trips. Thank you Dave, Albert, and Lee for a wonderful time. Ben (new student to BLS).

“Hello I’m Josh Mace. I’m a freshman at the Baltimore Lab School. Ever since I was a little boy I’ve been drawn to the water, and the animals that make it their home. Through Baltimore Lab School’s partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation I have enjoyed learning more about how I can help the bay! In my spare time I like to take pictures and spend time with my friends and family."
