Reduce: No More Wax Paper Cups! January and February 2014
During Wednesday STEAM Lessons, our middle school students decided to reduce the number of wax paper cups we use every day. They counted cups and recorded a baseline. Next, they created art sculptures out of the used cups to draw attention to the problem. Then they created a social marketing campaign to change behavior. They created commercials and signed a pledge to use refillable bottles and coffee mugs. Number of Cups used in one week: Baseline: 974 After Campaign: 512 Teachers: All Middle School Staff |

Recycle in School! 2004 to present
Green teams of students regularly monitor, track, and manage the school recycling bins. Grades 6-12 have formed committees to collect recycling. Students created boxes for recycling stations. As a result of this Green School application, we discovered that our recycling company was not picking up and we arranged for a new company to begin to resume pick up of our recycling on February 25, 2014. Re- use! Art as a powerful statement. Students re-purpose used materials into art projects.
Arts-Integrated Curriculum: In the Lower and Middle Schools, our arts teachers also collaborate with classroom teachers to provide an arts-integrated curriculum in which an art form is used as an approach to teaching and a vehicle for meeting learning objectives in an academic subject area. "In their High School photography and digital design courses, students are encouraged to explore and deepen their connections to nature by putting themselves in the shoes of other animals, by illustrating or constructing creatures that they have a connection with, and through using digital or recycled materials to lessen the impact of their artwork on the environment." |

Organic Farming Education. Real Food Farms: July 5, 2012
Students in grades 7-12 explored a pollutant-free organic farm. The Upper School students embarked upon an adventure to Real Food Farms. Real Food Farms is an organization that promotes urban agriculture. One of our trip goals was to introduce students to a local model of sustainable agriculture in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The students saw numerous crops, hoop houses, beehives, and a vermiculture set-up. A few even touched the composting worms. The biggest highlights from the trip included planting seeds, picking vegetables, sampling the produce, and of course running through the sprinkler.
Teachers: Erica Skoczylas, Jim Schwartz, Erin Moeller, Heather Surine, John Mulherin, Anant Saran, Karen Yeoman.

Composting in Baltimore Lab School Classroom: Fall 2013 to present
6th-8th grade middle school students research, build and monitor a classroom worm bin of red wigglers. This work was integrated into content focused on the roles of organisms in their environment, specifically decomposers, and the importance of decomposition. They began by studying fresh compost and identifying the organisms that lived in it. Students made connections between the role of decomposers and their usefulness in reducing waste and reusing materials. Students regularly supply the bin with organic waste from their lunches and inform their families and classmates about the benefits that composting provides to the environment.
