SustainaFest
September 4, 2014
11 Baltimore Lab School teachers and administrators met with George Chamel III and Wade Boarman to talk about our partnership with SustainaFest and Student Sustainability Lab. Some ideas we agreed to pursue were:
1. Photography contest and film Festival. Organized by Zac Lawhon.
This high school photography class is going out on September 24, 2014 to photograph the Jones Falls in various locations along the rivers path above and under Baltimore City to the inner harbor. They will also be entering and helping with the SustainaFest Film Festival at Indian Creek on Saturday Oct. 25, 2014. Student ambassadors will take on the role of promoting the film festival and 360 contest within our school. These students will be in charge of putting up posters, telling other students, and other reasonable activities concerning the events. Objective 1,4 Celebration; Objective 3,1 Community Partnerships
2. “Cutting edge film, awe-inspiring music, visionary speakers, social entrepreneurs, seasoned educators, and innovative projects to spark dialogue, spotlight innovations, and catalyze new solutions.” Organized by Patti Child. Objective 1,1 Environmental Literacy instruction;
We will work with George and Dwayne in order to engage our students in rigorous and relevant material to dive deeply into our study of the Wilderness, watersheds and sustainability in order to promote stewardship of the Chesapeake Bay. We picked “Mission Blue” as our first film to explore with our teachers and students as we talk about Interconnections, interactions and implications of human, technological and natural systems.
3. Free Film Nights. Organized through Zac Lawhon and Amy Kisler.
Films will focus on exploration and discovery of the wilderness specifically related to watersheds. The first film will be “Mission Blue”. Other films need to be decided. The second film, possibly DamNation. We will be exploring the idea of conservation and sustainability from oceans, to the Chesapeake Bay, to the rivers, to the streams to our front door. Objective 3,1 Community Partnerships
4. Capstone Project. Organized by John Mulherin.
To be completed during our summer 2015 Camp. Following our students lead, the project will highlight interconnections, interactions and implications of human, technological and natural systems and highlight new innovative solutions to the problems affecting our watershed. Objective 2 Student Driven Best Management Practices

November 13, 2013 to present.
Early after care students joined the Park School in Baltimore, Maryland with Maryland Institute College of Art(MICA) as part of MICA student Qianfei Wang's Doctorial thesis. Each Wednesday, Fei taught our students art classes both inside and outside in Druid Hill Park. She arranged for our students to explore the Park School's stream, which we learned is a part of the Jones Falls that flows underground near our our school as it travels on it's way to the Baltimore Harbor. Dance, art, music and drama workshops were held at both Baltimore Lab School and The Park School. Students danced like the animals in the Chesapeake Bay and in the stream on Park School property. Arts workshops + Shared exhibits+ outdoor play opportunities and new friends! Language+ finally launched its website, please check it out! http://www.languageplusproject.com/ Fei would love to hear any feedback and suggestions. Our Future: Department of Natural Resources neighbors in the Geological Society Building
In the future, we are collaborating with our Department of Natural Resources neighbors in the Geological Society Building next door, to reduce our impervious surface and create more green space for our students to be able to conduct restoration projects. We are also exploring the use of their indoor lab space for more in depth experiments.
